FDA 21 CFR 101.9 Nutrition Labeling Rules & Simplified Panel Criteria

Official FDA.gov Guidance

Quick Compliance Summary (Standard vs. Simplified Nutrition Format):

Under federal regulation 21 CFR 101.9(f), a custom food nutrition panel qualifies for the Simplified Nutrition Format when the product contains insignificant amounts (statutorily zero) of at least 5 of the 8 core nutrition metrics (Calories, Total Fat, Saturated Fat, Trans Fat, Cholesterol, Sodium, Total Carbohydrate, and Protein)—common in sparkling water, black coffee, culinary spices, and diet beverages. However, omitting mandatory declarations without appending the exact "Not a significant source of..." footnote in 6 pt Helvetica or shrinking the 22 pt bold Calorie readout on packages exceeding 40 square inches triggers retail compliance rejection; compare the exact federal nutrition typography thresholds in the specification table below.

Daily Value (%DV) Rounding Rules & Added Sugars Nutrition Calculation

Our nutrition calculation engine computes Daily Value percentages using the federal 2,000-calorie reference diet: Total Fat (78g), Saturated Fat (20g), Cholesterol (300mg), Sodium (2,300mg), Total Carbohydrate (275g), Dietary Fiber (28g), Added Sugars (50g), Vitamin D (20mcg), Calcium (1,300mg), Iron (18mg), and Potassium (4,700mg). Under nutrition rounding rules, calories below 5 round to 0, calories up to 50 round to the nearest 5-calorie increment, and calories above 50 round to the nearest 10-calorie increment.

Pairing Custom Nutrition Panels with Retail UPC-A & Shopify Barcodes

Commercial food packaging requires both an accurate nutrition panel and a scannable retail barcode. After exporting your vector nutrition PDF at 100% Actual Size, you can generate matching GS1 retail symbols using our UPC-A Retail Barcode Generator or batch-import entire product catalogs via the Shopify Barcode Label Maker.
