EAN-13 (GTIN-13) Technical Guide: GS1 Standards, Checksum Verification & POS Readability
In global consumer goods, retail supermarket checkout, and international trade, the 13-digit European Article Number (EAN-13), now designated under the Global Standards 1 (GS1) umbrella as the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN-13), is the universal standard for point-of-sale retail scanning. Every commercial item sold across European, Asian, Latin American, and Australian retail stores carries an EAN-13 symbol. Understanding its structure, parity encoding, and checksum mechanics is critical for consumer product manufacturers.
Structural Anatomy of a 13-Digit GTIN
An EAN-13 barcode is composed of four standardized segments:
- GS1 Country Prefix (2–3 Digits): Identifies the regional GS1 member organization where the company prefix was registered (e.g. 500–509 UK, 400–440 Germany, 690–699 China).
- Company Prefix (4–6 Digits): A unique identification number licensed by the manufacturer from GS1.
- Item Reference Number (3–5 Digits): Assigned by the product manufacturer to uniquely identify a specific product SKU, flavor, size, or packaging variant.
- Check Digit (13th Digit): A mathematically computed Modulo-10 verification digit that detects manual keying or optical scanning errors.
The GS1 Modulo-10 Checksum Algorithm
The 13th digit of an EAN-13 code is not arbitrary; it is calculated using an alternating weighted sum. To illustrate how LabelQueue validates your barcode:
- Consider the 12-digit prefix:
400638133393. - Sum the digits in Even positions (2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th, 12th):
0 + 6 + 8 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 23. - Multiply the even sum by 3:
23 × 3 = 69. - Sum the digits in Odd positions (1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 11th):
4 + 0 + 3 + 1 + 3 + 9 = 20. - Add both values together:
69 + 20 = 89. - Take the remainder modulo 10:
89 % 10 = 9. The check digit is the amount required to reach the next multiple of 10:10 - 9 = 1. - The complete 13-digit barcode is
4006381333931.
Optical Guard Bars & Quiet Zone Regulations
Unlike general industrial barcodes, EAN-13 features distinctive visual guard patterns:
- Normal Guard Bars: The start pattern (101) and stop pattern (101) extend lower than the data bars, framing the numerical digits below.
- Center Guard Pattern: A 01010 sequence in the center separates the left 6 digits from the right 6 digits, extending downward into the text line.
- Quiet Zones: A minimum of 11 modules of white space on the left and 7 modules on the right must be strictly preserved. Truncating the Quiet Zone with decorative packaging borders causes point-of-sale checkout scanners to fail.
